OEM vs ODM Activewear: Which Manufacturing Model Fits Your Brand?
Understand the difference between OEM and ODM activewear production and choose the right model for your design control, speed and budget.

OEM and ODM are often used interchangeably in apparel conversations, but they describe different ways of developing a product. Knowing the difference helps a brand request the right service and avoid unclear expectations during sampling.
OEM production usually starts with the brand's own design direction. The brand may provide a tech pack, sketches, measurements, artwork or reference samples, and the manufacturer turns those instructions into a finished garment. OEM is useful when fit, construction and visual identity are central to the product strategy.
ODM production generally begins with an existing manufacturer pattern, design library or product foundation that can be adapted. The brand may select a silhouette, modify details, add branding and choose fabrics or colors. ODM can shorten the path from idea to sample when the brand wants a proven starting point.
The right choice depends on the amount of design control you need. A technical performance product with a specific fit may benefit from a more detailed OEM process. A startup testing a capsule collection may prefer an ODM base with focused customization.
Ask how intellectual property, patterns, artwork and revisions are handled. Confirm which elements are exclusive to your project and which are standard development assets. Clear documentation helps protect both sides and keeps the project commercially realistic.
The sampling process should match the selected model. OEM work may require more technical review, while ODM work may move faster but still needs fit, fabric and branding approval. In both cases, approve a final pre-production sample before bulk manufacturing.
For an informed recommendation, send the desired product type, reference images, target market, quantity and branding needs. Honch Apparel supports both OEM and ODM activewear development and can help brands select a practical route from concept review to production.
